A very good evening and welcome to Kampong Gelam for the launching of Cahaya Ramadan. We would like to thank Malay Heritage Centre for the usage of the auditorium.
My name is Muhammad Zaki bin Maarof being the newly elected Chairman of One Kampong Gelam, everyone called as OKG. OKG association was formed in June 2014, its function is to represent the Business Stakeholders in this area for the purpose bringing vibrancy, increase footfall and eventually positive business revenues to Kampong Gelam.
OKG is also blessed that the Kampong Gelam precinct consists of major stakeholders such as Sultan Mosque, Malay Heritage Foundation, Malay Heritage Centre and Aliwal Art Centre. We are the Kampong Gelam Alliance, continuously providing support to one another especially to OKG activities.

OKG would like to specially thank to our two main supporters, they are the (URA) Urban Redevelopment Authorities and (STB) Singapore Tourism Board for acknowledging all OKG initiatives and plans in order to rejuvenate the precinct and they have been providing a great domain knowledge experience, sharing and assist to facilitate OKG Secretariat Team.
I would like to briefly share some of our ongoing and past activities. OKG has initiated road closure at Bali Lane, Haji Lane and Bussorah Street on the weekends and managed to regularise the outdoor recreation area and outdoor display area ORA and ODA on the closed street. The road closure is suspended currently due to the pandemic and we hope it will resume soon.
OKG has organised big events such as this Cahaya Ramadan, Heritage Day Out, Great Singapore Kampong Gelam Experience – in conjunction with GSS, the Grand Prix Season, and many more events.
Recently, OKG has a new secretariat team administered by Mr Sudirman Muzaini. He and his project team is also the Project Lead for this year Cahaya Ramadan campaign. We are working hard and has set the pace for future activities in Kampong Gelam.
Cahaya Ramadan is the first Ramadan campaign after more than a decade. Kampong Gelam will come alive with various activities and programmes such as workshop, tours, online infotainment for all. Themed Cahaya Ramadan, the event is steered to revive and resurrect the spirit of the holy month. While imprinting the religious practice and values, Kampong Gelam’s centred the traditions and historical footprints, revolving and strengthening community spirit, social resilience and inter-ethnic harmony.
As the organiser of Cahaya Ramadan, A series of safe management measurers were ensured. We have put in place hundreds of banners, stickers and info boards placed all around Kampong Gelam reminding visitors to adhere to the Safety Management Measures. OKG hope all visitors supports this great initiative in view to the current situation.
Today or shortly after…
We will witness the first cultural themed monument light show at Sultan Mosque which is called The Light of Gelam. We would like to thank Sultan Mosque, Mr Patail for the kind support. This extensive project is done by a group of young professional entrepreneurs. OKG would like to thank Epson for the generous sponsorship and also providing great guidance to the team. OKG wishes its sincere thanks to our previous Chairperson, Mr Saeid Labaffi. He has devoted time and commitment covering the ground works and engaging all related government agencies sourcing for opportunities and potential collaboration.
We realize and feel, It’s a sad moment for some of the stakeholders and also One Kampong Gelam Association during this difficult times.. But we hope with Cahaya Ramadan, we will together overcome challenges and determine to emerge stronger for a better Kampong Gelam.
Once again, I would like to thank the Project Lead team for the great work for Cahaya Ramadan. We hope with all this campaign at Kampong Gelam, we will continue to get all the relevant support needed and One Kampong Gelam Association promises to enliven and establish Kampong Gelam as a vibrant cultural district.
Lastly I would like to wish all Muslims “Selamat Menjalani Ibadah Puasa di Bulan Ramadan yang mulia”.
